We say that a symmetric function space has the property whenever all sets of independent mean zero functions , , are poorly approximated by any linear combinations of arbitrary functions, if is sufficienly smaller that ; namely, for some we have , , where is the Kolmogorov -width of the set . The spaces satisfy this property if and only if or . The goal of this paper is to move from scale to a larger class of symmetric spaces. We obtain rather broad conditions, under which such a space has the property and prove precise statements for particular scales of Lorentz spaces and Orlicz spaces.
