Two families of sets and are called \emph{cross--intersecting} if for all and . Determining the maximum product of sizes for such cross--intersecting families is an active problem in extremal set theory. In this paper, we verify the following cross--intersecting version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem: For and , the maximun value of for two cross--intersecting families and is . Moreover, we characterize the extremal families attaining the upper bound. Our result confirms a conjecture of Tokushige for , and actually proves a more general result.
