Let be an algebraic group of exceptional Lie type in characteristic , its fixed-point subgroup under the action of a Steinberg endomorphism , and an almost simple group with socle . A maximal subgroup is called non-generic if it is almost simple and its socle is not isomorphic to a group of Lie type in characteristic . A finite subgroup of is Lie primitive if it does not lie in any proper closed positive-dimensional subgroup of ; it is Lie imprimitive if it lies in a positive-dimensional subgroup of ; it is strongly imprimitive if can be chosen to be stable under the action of , where is the group generated by inner, diagonal, graph, and field automorphisms of . We study the possible embeddings of a non-generic primitive simple group in the adjoint algebraic group in characteristic coprime to when is one of , , , . In particular, we construct copies of in over a suitable finite field , and use them to deduce the number of conjugacy classes of in and , and whether is a maximal subgroup of . We also study the case of when is one of and in characteristic coprime to , and show that in such cases is a strongly imprimitive subgroup of ; in particular, is not a maximal subgroup of .
