We characterize some classes of finite soluble groups. In particular, we prove that: a finite group is supersoluble if and only if has a normal subgroup such that is supersoluble and avoids every chief factor of between and for every maximal subgroup of the generalized Fitting subgroup of ; a finite soluble group is a -group (that is, Sylow permutability is a transitive relation on ) if and only if has a normal subgroup such that is nilpotent and avoids every chief factor of between and for every subnormal subgroup of .
