Higher categories

Invited contribution to the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics. We give an introduction to the homotopical theory of higher categories, focused on motivating the definitions of the basic objects, namely $\mathrm{\infty }$-categories and $(\mathrm{\infty },n)$-categories.
