Given a language and a positive integer , a -extension is a string for which there exists a string such that is the string satisfying . In this paper we show that ordinal extensions ( -extensions for various and ) constitute a subtle, but remarkably useful concept. We characterize the regular languages in terms of ordinal extensions, and we extract from this characterization two general methods for giving very easy proofs of nonregularity.
