We provide closed-form expressions for the degree-derivatives
[∂2Pν(z)/∂ν2]ν=n and $[\partial
Q_{\nu}(z)/\partial\nu]{\nu=n},withz\inCandn\inN{0},whereP_{\nu}(z)andQ_{\nu}(z)$ are the Legendre
functions of the first and the second kind, respectively. For
[∂2Pν(z)/∂ν2]ν=n, we find that
∂ν2∂2Pν(z)ν=n=−2Pn(z)Li221−z+Bn(z)ln2z+1+Cn(z),
where Li2[(1−z)/2] is the dilogarithm function, Pn(z) is the
Legendre polynomial, while Bn(z) and Cn(z) are certain polynomials in
z of degree n. For [∂Qν(z)/∂ν]ν=n and
z∈C∖[−1,1], we derive ∂ν∂Qν(z)ν=n=−Pn(z)Li221−z−21Pn(z)ln2z+1ln2z−1+41Bn(z)ln2z+1−4(−1)nBn(−z)ln2z−1−6π2Pn(z)+41Cn(z)−4(−1)nCn(−z). A counterpart expression
for [∂Qν(x)/∂ν]ν=n, applicable when x∈(−1,1),
is also presented. Explicit representations of the polynomials Bn(z) and
Cn(z) as linear combinations of the Legendre polynomials are given.
