The optimal function f satisfying
E∣1∑nXi∣≥f(\mathrbbE∣X1∣,...,E∣Xn∣) for every martingale (X1,X1+X2,...,∑i=1nXi) is shown to be
given by f(a)=max{ak−i=1∑k−1ai}k=1n∪{2ak}k=3n for a∈[0,∞[n. A similar
result is obtained for submartingales (0,X1,X1+X2,...,∑i=1nXi).
The optimality proofs use a convex-analytic comparison lemma of independent
interest.
