We bound fractional chromatic numbers by establishing a connection with low-weight odd-cycle transversals. Let be an integer and let be a graph of odd girth at least whose odd-cycle covering polyhedron is integral. For every nonnegative weight vector , we obtain a set such that is bipartite and . Here, for any , and denotes the maximum average degree of . Consequently, if , then has fractional chromatic number at most . As applications, we prove that, for every positive integer , every -vertex planar graph of girth at least has fractional chromatic number at most , establishing the girth version of Naserasr’s fractional coloring conjecture with a strict inequality. For , we furthermore prove that the upper bound holds for every -vertex triangle-free planar graph and this is attained for infinitely many values of .
