Let be an odd prime, a finite -group, and a finite faithful irreducible -module. We show that if has exactly one regular orbit on , then is a Mersenne prime and embeds into for some , where is a Sylow -subgroup of the monomial group and is its natural module, regarded over . We determine the largest orbit size of on and the number of orbits of this size, and we construct subgroups of of order whose unique regular orbit is a largest orbit of ; for such subgroups exist for every , whereas for Mersenne primes we prove that they exist only for . Finally, we classify the subgroups of of order with exactly one regular orbit for and, with the help of a computer, for and , where there are such pairs up to isomorphism; for and we show that there are exactly conjugacy classes of such subgroups in . In particular, such a subgroup is in general not determined by its regular orbit.
