For a -algebra let be the set of all elements with , and . We study the algebraic, metric and topological properties of . We describe and show that for the quotient map . For finite-dimensional we prove , where is the set of minimal projections of and is the set of positive norm-one elements at distance one from every element of ; we also show that the analogous statement with the minimal projections of the bidual fails in general. When the distance from to is or , according to whether has a nontrivial projection. Moreover, is norm compact if and only if is finite-dimensional, closedness of passes to hereditary subalgebras, is norm closed for every von Neumann algebra, and the extreme points of are exactly its projections. For a compact, locally path connected space the set is closed, whereas fails to be closed when is unital without nontrivial projections.
